Leveraging advanced technology to effectively address the pressing issues of waste management is crucial for achieving sustainability. An essential initial step in this process is implementing waste sorting at the source. This practice not only enhances the efficiency of waste management systems but also plays a significant role in promoting sustainable waste management practices across Africa. By encouraging individuals and communities to categorize their waste right from the outset, we can significantly reduce contamination and improve recycling rates, ultimately leading to a cleaner, healthier environment.
At Sort at Source, we’re using technology to make waste management smarter, simpler, and more accessible for everyone. We build digital tools and physical infrastructure that empower individuals, households, and businesses to take control of their waste — right from where it starts.
Our solution combines mobile apps, smart recycling systems, and community recycling hubs to streamline how waste is sorted, collected, and processed. With our app, users can easily schedule pickups, track their recycling impact, and earn rewards. Our smart systems automate sorting and provide real-time data, while our hubs serve as neighborhood access points for safe and efficient drop-offs.
We believe managing waste shouldn’t be complicated — or limited to those with access to formal systems. That’s why we’re designing solutions that meet people where they are, turning everyday actions into environmental impact.
At Sort at Source, we’re not just cleaning up waste — we’re building a future where recycling is seamless, tech-powered, and community-driven.

I’m Christianah Owoeye, the founder and CEO of Sort at Source. I’m a social entrepreneur deeply passionate about using technology and community-driven solutions to solve the waste crisis. With over five years of experience in business administration and sustainability, I’ve dedicated my work to making recycling simple, accessible, and valuable for underserved communities.
I’m currently an Acumen West Africa Fellow, and I’ve had the privilege of receiving training from institutions like Lagos Business School, the Enterprise Development Centre, IFC, and the World Bank. Through Sort at Source, I’ve led projects that have received support from organizations such as ActionAid, OXFAM, and TEF-UNDP.
My goal is to build clean, healthy communities by turning waste into opportunity — whether it’s jobs, cleaner environments, or sustainable products. I believe everyone deserves access to smart waste solutions, and I’m committed to making that a reality.
